Barbara King Myers, 89, formerly of Pinoak Drive, Franklin, died September 1, 2013 at the Caring Place, Franklin. She was born January 5, 1924, the daughter of Claude C. King and Jessie M. Mahood King. She was a 1941 graduate of Emlenton High School and received her bachelors from Hood College in Maryland.
A registered dietitian, she completed her internship at Shadyside Hospital. After marrying Lawrence A. Myers, Jr, on September 8, 1951 she became a full-time homemaker and mother. Later she returned to work at Goshen General Hospital in Indiana, and after the family returned to Pennsylvania, at Franklin Hospital and Venango Manor.
Barbara was a devoted wife and mother. She and her husband never parted for the day without exchanging a kiss. She and Lawrence kept a wonderful garden and took the family on vacation adventures including fishing in Wisconsin, horseback riding in Colorado, and canoeing in Minnesota. She enjoyed hiking, biking, and watching the many birds at their backyard feeders. She was a great cook. She and her husband volunteered for Meals-on-Wheels. She played basketball in high school, and loved the Pirates and Steelers. While a resident at the Caring Place, she enjoyed watching the Steelers with her cousin Don Sloan. Barb was an active member of First United Methodist Church in Franklin. She participated in the UMW, Baradelis class, handbell choir, and the quilting group Flying Needles.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her brothers, William King and Claude King, Jr. She is survived by her children: Patricia Myers and partner, Carolyn Sheehan, of Weare, NH; Rev. Byron Myers and wife, Melanie, of Oil City; Susan Sharra and husband, Guy, of Rancho Cucamonga, CA; grandchildren, Lauren (Myers) Stoltz and husband, Lucas, of Franklin; Anthony and Victoria Sharra; and great-grandchildren, Elizabeth and Nathaniel Stoltz.
Friends will be received at the Huff Funeral Home, 312 W. Park St, Franklin 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Tuesday, September 3. Funeral services will be held in the funeral home chapel on Wednesday, September 4 at 2:00 p.m. Interment will follow at the Emlenton Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorial gifts may be made to The Caring Place, or Franklin First United Methodist Church.
