It is with heavy hearts that we announce the unexpected passing of Byron Neil Boughner, 77, of Cooperstown, at his home on Tuesday, October 15, 2024.
Born in Franklin on May 10, 1947, he was the son of the late Emery Q. and Edna M. Couch Boughner.
Byron graduated from Rocky Grove High School in 1967. Shortly after, he proudly served his country by joining the United States Air Force. He was stationed at Hurlburt Field in Florida, where he worked as an Auto/Truck Mechanic and was an active member of the USO. Byron was honorably discharged as a Sergeant in September 1971.
While stationed in Florida, Byron met the love of his life, Cynthia (Biggles), in Fort Walton Beach and they were later married on October 23, 1971, sharing nearly 53 years of marriage together.
Byron dedicated many years to working at The Caring Place as Maintenance Supervisor. Later, he joined the maintenance department at Sugar Creek Station, where he retired in 2014. In his retirement, he continued working on various projects and spent time working with his brother Jerry, at Eclipse Electric.
Byron had a deep appreciation for nature and took great care in preserving it. He was passionate about woodworking, furniture caning, gardening, hunting, cutting firewood, and taking walks in the woods. He was also a Firefighter and Lifetime Member of the Cooperstown Volunteer Fire Department, as well as a supporter of Disabled American Veterans. Byron also enjoyed playing guitar and harmonica to entertain his twin grandchildren.
He leaves behind a lifetime of memories and stories for his wife Cynthia, his daughter, Renee Stephens, and her husband, Master Gunnery Sergeant Daniel Stephens, of Hawaii; and his son, Thomas Boughner of Cooperstown. His grandchildren, Kanoa and Kanani Stephens, will always carry fond memories of their Granddad and the love he shared with them.
Byron is also survived by his brother, Wesley (Janet) Boughner, of Cooperstown.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his siblings: Rev. Robert E. Boughner, Eugene C. Boughner, Beverly Potter, Gerald “Jerry” Boughner, Richard “Dick” Boughner, and infant brother, Edwin W. Boughner; his nieces Tamara Boughner and Judy Boughner; his nephews Gerald "Jerry" Boughner Jr. and Donald E. Boughner; and his cat and faithful companion, “PC.”
