Dorothy Marie Smith, 85, of 1498 Thompson Rd, died peacefully at UPMC Northwest, Seneca, Thursday, April 5, 2012 at 10:25 A.M.
A daughter of Rex and Ila Shakley McElhattan she was born in Knox on December 29, 1926. She was a graduate of Salem High School.
She worked for a short time at C.P.T. before beginning her employment at the Franklin A&P. She managed the cheese department for many years.
An active member of the First Presbyterian Church in Franklin, she had served as an elder, deacon, Sunday school teacher, and youth group leader. She also was involved in the women?s groups and the prayer chain. She volunteered for the Meals - on -Wheels and at The Caring Place.
She enjoyed traveling with her husband and they had visited 49 of the 50 states missing only Alaska. She enjoyed working on crafts, sewing, gardening and quilting. Several of her quilts earned blue ribbons and she completed quilts for all her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
On November 25, 1949 she married Lawrence E. Smith who survives along with three daughters Brenda Adamski and her husband Stanley of Valencia, Susan Killian and her husband Thomas of Grove City, and Lori Coup and her husband Douglas of Downingtown; 8 grandchildren Chris Adamski and his wife Meghan of Carnegie, Brad Adamski and his wife Lindsey of Bethel Park, Taryn Marie Adamski of Southside Pittsburgh, Kelly Jones and her husband Andy of South Park, Ryan Killian and his wife Natasha of Peoria, IL, Shane Killian of Pittsburgh, David Coup and Jessica Coup both of Downingtown; 3 great-grandchildren Ashton Jones, Bricen Jones and Aubrey Killian.
Also surviving are a brother Robert McElhattan and his wife Autumn of Knox; 4 sisters Shirley Barger of Butler, Barb Burgdorfer and her husband Bob, Connie Strohmeyer and her husband Bill and Darlene McElhattan and her companion Jim Lewis all of Knox.
She was preceded in death by her parents, a brother Paul McElhattan and two sisters, Thelma ?Nook? Chadman and Betty Bargar.
Friends will be received in the Huff Chapel, 312 W. Park St. from 2-4 & 6-8 p.m. Monday. Funeral services will be held in the funeral home at 2 p.m. Tuesday with the Rev. Charles McClung, pastor of the New Hope Presbyterian Church officiating.
Interment will follow in the Franklin Cemetery.
