Douglas C. Nelson, 68, of Franklin passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his family on Monday, February 5, 2018.
Born in Jamestown, New York on March 9, 1949 he was a son of the late Elton C. and Clara J. Nelson.
A 1967 graduate of Warren Area High School, Doug earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology from Edinboro University in 1971. He obtained his Master of Occupational Therapy from Western Michigan University in 1976.
Doug began his career as an Occupational Therapist at Warren State Hospital. In June 1977, he moved his family to Franklin, where he began working at Polk Center. He also provide occupational therapy services to patients through Easter Seals, Intermediate Unit 6, and Child Development Centers. Doug retired after 30 years from VNA of Venango County in March of 2015. During his long career in Venango County, Doug touched many lives with his kind heart and gentle demeanor. He provided therapy and assistance to countless people of all ages and considered everyone a friend or potential friend.
Doug was an avid Pittsburgh Steelers and Penn State fan. He loved reading, traveling, and especially enjoyed biking and could often be found on our local bike trails.
On July 10, 1970, he married his high school sweetheart and love of his life, the former Mary Speidel of Warren, who continues to reside in Franklin.
Also surviving are two children: Christopher Nelson and his wife Julie of San Diego, California and Ellen Hunter and her husband Michael of Cleveland, Ohio; five grandchildren: Ethan, Sadie, Finn, Saraya and Archer; a sister, Beth Porter and her husband Greg of Warren, Pennsylvania; a brother, Steve Nelson; a sister-in-law, Julie Glavin and her husband David of Solon, Ohio and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by two brothers, Jeffrey Nelson and Larry Nelson.
There will be no visitation.
A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Monday March 5, 2018 in St. John's Episcopal Church, 1145 Buffalo St. Franklin with Rev. Elizabeth Yale, officiating.
The family invites friends and colleagues to join them in a celebration of Doug's life, to be held between 12:30 P.M and 2:00 P.M. at Bella Cucina, 1234 Liberty St., Franklin.
Funeral arrangements entrusted to Huff Funeral Home & Cremation Services Inc., 312 West Park St. Franklin.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the VNA Hospice Foundation, 491 Allegheny Blvd. Franklin, PA 16323.
