Evelyn J. Blum, 90, formerly of Washington Street, Franklin died at 9:45 p.m. Tuesday September 27, 2011 at Sugar Creek Station.
She was born March 19, 1921 in Oil City to the late John Patrick and Agnes Schupp Welsh. She graduated from St. Joseph?s High School in 1939 and married William Allen Blum on July 15, 1940. Together they raised six children: William (Charleen) Blum of Warriors Mark, Jane Blum of Lakewood, NJ, Ruth Glasl of Greenwood, SC, Cathy Vanderhoff (Fred) of Greensburg, Dori Blum of Franklin and Pat Almeida (Mike) of Springfield, VA.
She had been a member of St. Patrick?s Church for over 60 years and for many of those years organized and prepared the yearly Swiss steak dinners in addition to being a cook for numerous weddings and funerals. She was a chartered member and past president of the Catholic Daughters of America and a member of the Rosary Society.
She worked at the Franklin High School cafeteria and was promoted to Director of Food Services until her retirement in 1985.
Mrs. Blum was an avid game player, especially enjoying cards, scrabble, and dominoes and most of all, spending time with her family and friends.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband in 1978, her son-in-law Stan Glasl in 1996, all five of her siblings Ron Welsh, Marion Heath, Patricia Redfield, Jack Welsh and Bob Welsh. She was the last of that generation of the Welsh family.
She is survived by her six children and their spouses, 13 grandchildren: Beth Blum Spiker, Greg Blum, Kimberly Blum Johnson, Scott Glasl, Mark Glasl, Mike Glasl, John Vanderhoff, Jeff Vanderhoff, Julie Vanderhoff Verner, Brian Almeida, Evie Almeida Sugermeyer, Steve Almeida and John Almeida, 26 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Friends will be received in the Huff Chapel, 312 W. Park St. from 2-4 & 7-9 p.m. Friday. Jeff Vanderhoff will lead a celebration of his grandmother's life at 10 a.m. Saturday in the funeral home. A funeral Mass will be celebrated in St. Patrick Church at 11 a.m. Saturday with Monsignor John J. Herbein presiding.
Interment will follow in St. Patrick Cemetery.
Memorial donations may be made to St. Patrick Church, 949 Liberty Street, Franklin or to a charity of one?s choice.
