JulianButch� Conrad, 67, a former Franklin resident, President of his Franklin High School (FHS) class of 1960 and two-sport star athlete from 1957 to 1960, died Sunday evening, August 30 at Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital in Russell, KY.
Mr. Conrad, who seemed to be in excellent health, suffered a heart attack at his home in Flatwoods, KY.
He was born in Franklin on April 3, 1942 a son of Julius and Wladzia Marchibroda Conrad.
Mr. Conrad completed his elementary schooling at St. Patrick?s grade school where he was an outstanding student and served as an altar boy. At FHS, he was an outstanding student-athlete who co-captained the school?s 1960 undefeated football team and led that year?s undefeated dual-meet track team as a star sprinter competing in the 100, 220 yard dashes and the 220 relay.
His academic work and athletic ability earned him a scholarship to Dayton University where he played varsity football and in 1965 earned his BA degree in Industrial management. During his career, Mr. Conrad held a number of management positions with various steel companies including Youngstown Sheet and Tube and AK Steel.
Surviving are his wife, Janie Maitland Conrad, a former Franklin resident, his mother, 92-year old Wladzia Conrad of Franklin and two children, daughter, Elise Michelle Hartley and her husband Lance of Walnut Creek, CA and son, Christian Julian Conrad of Wexford, PA. Also surviving are one brother, Richard Julius Conrad and his wife Helen (Monroe, NC) and four sisters: Joan Ferrango and her husband Mike (Lufkin, TX), Jean Ployhar and her husband Jim, (Memphis, TN), Mary Conrad, Franklin; Cathy Turner and her husband Larry , Franklin PA. Mr. Conrad?s survivors also include his wife?s sister Martha Maitland Gealy and her husband Ted former residents of Franklin, and many loved nieces and nephews.
Preceding him in death was his father JuliusJules� Conrad who died in 1963.
?Butch� is also survived by the remaining members of the close-knit FHS class of 1960 who, under his leadership, kept in touch with each other and held lively reunions that were the envy of other classes. The members of Mr. Conrad?s FHS football team, who were notified of Butch?s passing by e-mail, responded with a spontaneous outpouring of love and affection.This team was like aband of brothers? co-captain Lou Fogle said,and now we all have lost a cherished member of our family.�
Mr. Conrad, a devoted Christian, served as a Lay Minister in his local church, and as a young man seriously considered becoming a priest.Butch?s� life, his friends knew, was guided by the fourF?s�: faith, family, friends and fishing.
Mr. Conrad will be brought to Franklin where friends may call at the Huff Chapel, 312 W. Park St. on Thursday, September 3rd from 2:00 - 4:00 pm and 7:00 - 9:00 pm.
A Vigil service will be held in the funeral home on Thursday at 3:30 p.m.
A mass of Christian burial in his honor will be celebrated by Monsignor John J. Herbein, at St. Patrick?s Church on Friday, September 4 at 10:00 am. Following the mass, internment will be at St. Patrick?s Cemetery.
