Mary Lucille Martin Gilmore, 102, died April 3, 2017 at Bluegrass Hospice Care Center in Lexington, KY. She was born in Grove City, Pennsylvania on September 4, 1914. She was the daughter of the late Sylvester J. Martin and Rachel Cokeane Martin. She married Calvin H. Gilmore on June 26, 1937.
She is survived by 5 children (and their spouses); Marjorie, Samuel, Thomas, Susan, and Richard; 12 grandchildren; and 15 1/2 great-grandchildren.
One granddaughter, Rebecca Anderson, preceded her in death.
She graduated from Slippery Rock State Teachers College in 1933 with her teacher's certification and taught in the Valley Grove School District for many years. She believed that everyone should get as good an education as possible and gave her best in educating others. Some of her most rewarding personal times came when she saw her five children, many grandchildren and great-grandchildren graduate with honors from high school and college.
She was an active member first of Galloway United Methodist Church and then of Fox Street Church of God in Franklin, PA. She was also active in the Franklin Women's Club and the Pennsylvania Retired Teachers Association. After retiring, she made quilts and crocheted Christmas ornaments, wrote poetry and short stories, and visited her children who lived in cities and countries far from Franklin, PA.
She moved to Wesley Village in Wilmore, Kentucky in December 2003 after the death of her husband. She enjoyed writing and filled notebooks with short stories and poetry.
She loved to bake and try new recipes. In her final years, she was grateful for the care and kindness shown to her by friends and family near and far. She cherished the times when people could visit and all of the cards and letters that she received. Even though she wasn't able to reply, she loved and felt loved right up to the end.
