Mary Lou Lazar, 93, of Franklin, passed away the morning of Tuesday, September 3, 2024 at the Collins House.
She was born on April 25, 1931 in Claridge, PA. She was daughter of Charles R. and Claira Bell Hostetler.
Mary Lou graduated in 1948 from Penn Township High School and from Indiana State Teacher College in 1952.
She was married to her husband, William H. Lazar, on May 8, 1954. He preceded her in death on January 22, 2012.
Mary Lou taught home economics at Franklin Regional Jr. Sr. High School, Oil City Jr. High School, and finally Cranberry Jr. Sr. High School, where she retired from in 1993. She also taught gourmet cooking classes and craft classes at Venango Co. Vo-Tech and did freelance demonstrations for Sharp Microwave Oven. Mary Lou also worked as a home service representative, teaching "Cooking with the Brain", for Natural Fuel Gas in Oil City.
She was a member of First United Methodist Church where she served as Chairman of the Memorials Committee. Mary Lou was a board member volunteer for Meals on Wheels, a former member of the American Association of University Women, and a member of the Order of the Eastern Star. Additionally, she was an original member of the Home Economics in Business and Education group and was awarded the Friend of 4-H Award.
In her free time, Mary Lou did crafts and made handmade cards. She enjoyed drying flowers from her garden and using natural materials to make Christmas decorations. Above all she loved spending time with her grandchildren which was not a hobby but a delight.
Surviving Mary Lou are her son and daughter in-law, William and Lori Lazar of Gibsonia; a daughter and son in-law Beth and Eric Cummings of Polk; five grandchildren, Cody and his wife Kate Lazar of New Kensington, Tara Cummings of Polk, Alyssa Lazar of NC, William Lazar of NY, and Erica Cummings of Grove City; Great-grandson, Oliver Lazar New Kensington. Also surviving is a sister, LaVerne Bartges, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Mary Lou was preceded in death by her husband and parents, and a sister, Betsy Cunningham.
Funeral arrangements entrusted to Huff-Guthrie Funeral Home & Cremation Services Inc. 312 West Park St. Franklin where family and friends are welcome from 2:00 - 4:00 & 6:00 - 8:00 P.M. Thursday and from 10:00 A.M. - 10:45 A.M. Friday.
A funeral service will follow at 11:00 A.M. Friday at First United Methodist Church, 1102 Liberty St. Franklin, PA with Pastor Connie Hoeke, officiating.
Interment will be made at Twin Valley Memorial Park in Delmont.
