Ruth E. Hovis, 94 of Erie, formerly of Franklin and Oil City went to be with her lord and her beloved husband at 9:55 P.M. Thursday January 7, 2016 at Forestview Health Care Center.
Born June 18, 1921 in Clintonville she was a daughter of the late David R. and Nancy S. Hoffman Hovis.
She was a graduate of the former Clintonville High School.
In her early years, Ruth worked at various jobs in the industries throughout the area. She then became a stay at home Mom and was an extremely dedicated and loving mother and wife. Later in life she worked at Polk Center for 12 years a resident service aide.
Ruth loved to travel with her late husband to destinations including Europe and Hawaii and many locations throughout the United States.
She was an avid collector of various decorative dishes, ceramic birds and coins. Ruth loved playing bingo and watching game shows such as Wheel of Fortune. She was a member of the DAR and Order of the Eastern Star.
She was of Methodist faith and a member of the First United Methodist Church in Franklin and later the Grace United Methodist Church in Oil City.
Mrs. Hovis was known for her spirit, determination, and devotion to her family and friends. Ruth always lived by the phrase work hard and play hard.
On November 28, 1942, she married Francis James Hovis Jr. and he preceded her in death on October 7, 1997.
Surviving is a son, Francis James "Jay" Hovis III of Erie and many nieces and nephews.
Ruth was the last surviving member of her immediate family. She was preceded in death by eight brothers and sisters, Vera McWilliams, Buelah Jacobs, Edith Hoffman, Raymond Hovis, Eugene Hovis, Virgil Hovis, Earl Hovis, and William Hovis.
Funeral arrangements entrusted to Huff Funeral Home & Cremation Services Inc., 312 West Park St. Franklin where family and friends are welcome from 10:00 A.M. - Noon on Thursday.
A funeral service will be held at Noon in the funeral home chapel with Rev. Byron Myers, Pastor of Grace United Methodist Church in Oil City, officiating.
Interment will be made in Clintonville Cemetery.
Memorial donations may be made to either Grace United Methodist Church 100 Central Ave. Oil City, PA 16301 or the First United Methodist Church 1102 Liberty St. Franklin, PA 16323.
