Velma R. Shawgo, age 93, died Friday, November 5, at UPMC Northwest Hospital, in Seneca, PA.
Mrs. Shawgo, a resident of Franklin since 1949, was born in the Slippery Rock area on September 13, 1917, the eldest of three daughters of Floyd and Martha Brandon Wimer. She attended Slipper Rock schools, graduating from high school in 1936.
She married E. Claude Shawgo in 1937, and the couple lived in Grove City with their two children Lynda and Lahr. Her husband worked for the Bashline Safety Equipment Co. until 1949, when Mr. Shawgo transferred to Miller Equipment Co. in Franklin.
Mrs. Shawgo was associated with the First National Bank of Meadville, Franklin Branch, from 1956 through 1969, where she was the liaison for the School Savings Plan, coordinating with the Parent teacher Association of each participating school.
Mrs. Shawgo was a member of the First United Methodist church in Franklin and was active in the Nursery Chapter of Eastern Star; the Eagles Auxiliary; the Civic League; and the Franklin Hospital Auxiliary. She was also active in the Women of the Moose organization, joining Franklin Chapter #669 in 1949 and serving on special committees for the chapter officers. Her accomplishments included local, national and international offices: Senior Regents, 1952-53; Academy of Friendship Degree, 1953; College of Regents Degree, 1955; Deputy Grand Regents of Western PA, 1963-64; Grand Council two-year term, 1971-73, and culminating in the international position of Grand Regent in 1978. She served on the Advisory Board 1979-83, and was given a Life Membership by a loving group of coworkers from the local Franklin chapter upon her retirement from the Advisory Board. She retired from Official Authorizations in March, 1998.
Surviving are a daughter Lynda and husband David Trutt, of Florida and Israel, and a son Lahr Shawgo of Franklin,; grandsons Michael Trutt of Jersey City, NJ and Joshua Trutt of New York, NY; sisters and brothers-in-law Mary Louise Brownson of Federal Way, WA, Robert Corll of Fenelton, PA and Rachel Shawgo, Opal Shawgo, Glenn Shawgo and his wife Ruth, all of Grove City, PA and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, Mrs. Shawgo was preceded in death by two sisters, Alice Wimer and Mrs. Monna Stewart and by her former husband, Claude Shawgo.
Visitation will be held from 2-4 & 7-9 Sunday at Huff Chapel Inc., 312 West Park St. Franklin.
Funeral services will be held at 11 A.M. Monday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Richard Harry, pastor of First United Methodist Church, Franklin officiating.
Interment will follow at Crestview Memorial Park, Grove City.
