Virginia A. Broms, 93, of rural Utica, passed away at 12:50 p.m. Tuesday August 3, 2010 at The Caring Place where she lived for nearly three years.
She was born November 5, 1916 to Victor and Gertrude Ehrhardt Fagerstrom in the McKeesport Hospital.
Virginia graduated from McKeesport High School in 1934 and worked at the McKeesport Tin Plate Company in her younger years.
She married David Brainerd Broms Sr. on February 23, 1942 and they moved to the Broms Homestead in rural Utica where they lived and worked and raised their four children. Brainerd passed away in 1979. Virginia remained at the farmhouse for ten years and then made her home with her daughter and family for eighteen years.
Virginia was an attendant and supervisor at Polk State Hospital for seventeen years and upon retirement served as church secretary for the North Sandy Presbyterian Church. As a member of the church, Virginia attended the Wyn Mor Sunday School Class and faithfully served in the church.
She was very active in the Polk Quilting Bee for many years where she was known asGinny�. Virginia had a love for crocheting and had a great talent for quilting. She lovingly made many beautiful quilts for her family and community. One of her hobbies was collecting bells and they will be shared with the family.
Surviving are two sons David B. Broms and his wife Susan of Wexford and Charles W. Broms and his fianc�� Fran of Tampa, FL; a daughter Patricia Powell and her husband William with whom she resided in Utica. Also surviving are grandchildren Jeffery Barefoot of Montebello, CA, Eric Barefoot of Bulverde, TX, Timothy Broms of Harrisburg, Tara Shaw and Robert Broms of Pittsburgh, James Broms of Virginia, Christine Broms of Tampa, FL, Colin Broms of Charleston, SC, Amy Ashford of DuPont, WA, Julie Christopher of Montclair NJ and Laurie Powell of Canton, NC. Also surviving are 13 great grandchildren and nieces, nephews and cousins.
Brainerd, her daughter Carole Barefoot, two sisters Mabel and Pearl Fagerstrom and a brother Charles William Fagerstrom preceded her in death.
Friends will be received in the Huff Chapel, 312 W. Park St., Franklin from 7-9 p.m. Saturday. Funeral services will be held in the North Sandy Presbyterian Church on the Utica Raymilton Rd. at 3:00 p.m. Sunday with Rev, Hydie Houston and Rev. Sam Wagner officiating.
Interment will be made in the Oak Hill Cemetery, Sandy Lake.
