William J. Bailey, 80, of 332 Wiley Ave. died at 4:15 p.m. Wednesday May 13, 2009 at UPMC Northwest, Seneca.
Born in 1928 in Meadville, PA, he was the son of Oakland K. and Susan E. Bailey.
Mr. Bailey was a 1946 graduate of Meadville High School and then entered the U.S. Army Air Corps, serving as a statistical clerk and earning the rank of Staff Sergeant. He earned a World War II Victory Medal and Army of Occupation Medal and was honorably discharged in August 1949.
He earned a bachelor?s degree in business from Allegheny College in 1955. He worked at A.O. Smith and General Electric in Erie, PA before relocating to Franklin in 1968 for a position with Joy Manufacturing, where he remained until his retirement.
Mr. Bailey enjoyed golfing, pool, ping pong, tennis, and watching all sports on TV. He was a Pittsburgh Steelers fan and followed professional and college football. He won a ping pong championship in Japan during his military service, and was a member of the Senior Golf League at Sleepy Hollow Golf Course. He also enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren.
He was married to the former Wilma Jeanne Money in July, 1956 by the Reverend James Cousins in Trinity Methodist Church in Ridgeway, PA, and she survives. In addition to his wife, he is survived by four sons: W. Scott Bailey and his wife Kathy of Seneca, Bruce Bailey and his wife Mary Jo of Williamsburg, VA; Christopher Bailey and his wife Brenda of Aurora, OH; and Michael Bailey of Philadelphia, PA; grandchildren Megan Bailey of Pittsburgh, Joshua Bailey of Seneca, Ryan Bailey stationed at Dyess Air Force Base, TX, and Gareth Bailey of Williamsburg, VA; and also a daughter-in-law, Alice Castonguay of Franklin. He is also survived by two brothers: James Bailey of Houston, TX and Donald Bailey and his wife Betty of Venice, FL; a sister-in-law, Georgie Jean Bailey of Dunlap, TN, and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Oakland K. Bailey, Jr., Harold Bailey and a sister, Marian Bailey Hyman.
Friends will be received in the Huff Chapel, 312 W. Park St. from 2-4 & 7-9 p.m. Friday. Funeral services will be held in the funeral home at 11 a.m. Saturday with Rev. Susan Evans, VNA Hospice Chaplain officiating.
Interment will follow in Sunset Hill Memorial Gardens with military honors rendered by V.E.T.S. Honor Guard.
The family has suggested memorial donations be made to VNA Hospice, 491 Allegheny Blvd., Franklin PA 16323.
